An Afrocentrist typically attaches social and political significance to historical topics such as Ancient Egypt. It was coined by Molefi Kete Asante to describe intellectual positions held by people who view the world from an African standpoint. In the quote at the top of my post Martin Bernal tells us the origins of the word Afrocentrism. Afrocentrism, Black Supremacy and African studies. There are three different schools of thought that I think most people can be claimed to adhere to when it comes to this topic. I'm pretty good at recognizing racism when I see it and believe I can provide a balanced perspective on this issue in response to Black people can be racist and there are many Black people who are racists like any other group of people. While most of my debates on race-related topics have been fixated on White racism I'm not someone who believes only White people can be racist. I read a few books and joined some other interest discussions where I came across the work of Keita and others. I decided to investigate the matter in depth. Opinions were mixed on the topic but even some on my side of these debates rejected the claim that the Ancient Egyptians were Black. I wrote this off as nonsense but I was surprised that several other Egalitarians were not as accepting of the use of Ancient Egypt as a counter to this argument. When I first got involved in race-related debates many of the racists were making the claim that Blacks were culturally inferior and that Blacks had never created a civilization. I've always had an interest in history and ancient civilizations. One debate I have become particularly interested in is the race of the Ancient Egyptians.

I'm despise racism and have spent a good deal of free time familiarizing myself with racist arguments and devising ways to refute them. The irony of that charge is that I got involved in discussions like this by getting in debates on the internet with the goal to combat racism. Rather than trying to continue the previous debate I'm taking the opportunity to expand on a sticking point from that debate which was her contention that the research I was defending was both Afrocentric and racist. Since she did not reply to my last post I'm assuming she is finished with the discussion. I was requested by a moderator to make a new thread if I wanted to continue my debate with AestheticDemon from Kahotep's thread.

Since then, the label "Afrocentrist" has been attached to a number of intellectual positions ranging from "All good things come from Africa," or as Leonard Jeffries puts it: "Africa creates, Europe imitates," to those, among whom I see myself, who merely maintain that Africans and peoples of African descent have made many significant contributions to world progress and that for the past two centuries, these have been systematically played down by European and North American historians. Before going any further, I should like to look at what is meant by "Afrocentrism." As Mary Lefkowitz points out, the term was invented by Molefi Asante, who sees it as a way to escape Eurocentrism and its extensions, by looking at the world from an African standpoint.
